Speaking of whirlwind

We left my mom's house Sunday night around 8. By the time we got to Cranberry, PA, the winds were whipping so strongly that I thought Breyten would be picked up by them. I honestly don't know that I've ever felt stronger winds. I'm sure they exist, but I've just never felt them. Apparently, hurricane Ike had made his way up to Ohio. The ride home was tricky, especially as we were enduring the cross winds on 79 south. Once we hit 70, we had a head wind, but it was much easier to navigate. In the course of our trip, we heard word that power was out at home. Little did we know what was in store for us: four days without electricity. And we were pretty lucky. We had no damage to our house and some of our neighbors are still without power. It goes to show just how bizarre the power grid is here in Columbus. Just half a block up the opposite side of our street, homes have no power while ours was restored last night. Here are a few pictures from the aftermath of the windstorm.

Breyten passes the time out of school (Columbus Public closed for four days) by playing under mommy's desk at work. At least the office had electricity, which saved all of Ada's frozen breast milk!

This part of Weber Road was closed due to a utility pole snapping at the base. You can see it at the left of this picture.

The first day after the storm, there were branches and foliage and debris everywhere. The kids on the street built what they called a "tee pee" in the boulevard in the front of our house. When they saw the city's branch collection trucks driving up the street, they encircled their headquarters and chanted "Save our Tee-Pee!" Their efforts were not in vane...the tee-pee still stands! They also managed to get in the metro section of yesterday's Columbus Dispatch.

Kudos to the kids on the "tee-pee"! Crazy storm you endured. Glad to hear your house is in good order and that Ada's food stores were saved!
Hope that Breyten was not too bored at the office ;)

Activism works. But when the kids are done with their Tee-Pee, who cleans up the mess? I hope someone planned for this eventuality - unless there are plans for the Tee-Pee to become a permanent part of the neighborhood.
